Started by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles in the early 70s, they were a doomsday cult eventually focused around the Hale-Bopp comet. They lived as ascetics, yearning to escape the physical realm – by riding a spaceship that was following the comet. How do hitch a ride? Mass suicide.
